Dull, brittle skin on the face is the result of natural aging combined with environmental factors. You can’t turn back the aging clock entirely, but you can restore a more youthful appearance to your face by having chemical peels performed by an experienced professional. A peel treatment will remove the uppermost layer of skin in a safe manner, and the body will respond by creating more skin tissue as well as more collagen.
Today, chemical peels are much more customized than in decades past. They are now more effective than ever before, and they can work no matter how light or dark the skin tone. We recommend consulting with us if you have concerns about dull facial skin that is beginning to wrinkle.
How Chemical Peels Work
A peel treatment involves the application of a special solution. As it sits on the skin for a set amount of time, it begins to affect the upper layer of skin. The cells die and will eventually flake away, something similar to what is experienced after a mild sunburn. Unlike a sunburn, however, a peel treatment doesn’t cause a rush of blood to the affected area. This is because the solution targets only the upper layers of skin.
The body responds to this by accelerating the production of new cells at a lower level. The lower dermal layers will slowly move upward to form the new epidermal layer. Collagen production increases, so the new epidermis will be smoother and suppler than the skin it replaced.
During a Consultation
During your consultation at Skin Boutique, we will examine your facial skin, note the thickness and the amount of moisture and measure the depth of any discolorations, such as age spots, freckles and acne scars. This allows us to determine which solution will work best.
Some peel treatments require the use of a stronger solution, or the treatment may work best if the solution is left on the skin surface for a longer period of time. A superficial peel involves little or no recovery period, whereas a medium-depth peel treatment may require more healing, up to a week.
Building Up Healthier Skin
After the skin is subjected to the solution, the uppermost layer of cells dies and will slowly flake away. Over the following weeks, the lower dermal layers will be forming a new epidermal layer, and this will soon become your skin surface. Since the new skin is full of collagen and elastin, your lines and wrinkles will be much less noticeable, and the skin tone itself will be improved. Be sure, as always, to wear sunscreen daily, as your “new” skin is like baby skin and needs to be protected.
